I learned how to crochet when I was a little girl and I didn't stick with it, but while I was on the road touring, I picked it up again and made a simple scarf.
From that simple scarf I decided I wanted to learn how to knit because I liked the way knitted garments looked as opposed to crocheted garments. I also wanted to learn how to knit because I'm allergic to wool, which by the way I have learned since then that it's not the wool I am allergic to, but what the manufacturers treat it with because I can spin wool. Anyway, I kept getting upset seeing all the lovely sweaters in the stores and knowing very well that I couldn't wear them. It made me jealous. So I figured if I learned to knit, I could make all the lovely sweaters I wanted in fibers that I could wear.
Now, what I'm really trying to get to here is this, what really motivates us? Is it a new skill, hobby, something you see on the street, outdoors or on your television? What gets our creative juices flowing? In knitting do you let the yarn dictate to you as to what your next project should be, or is it that one awesome looking pattern that you saw in a new knitting magazine/book that crys out....."Please knit/crochet me".
For me, it's a little bit of both. I designed these shorts after seeing the yarn. I kept thinking fatigue pants...oh yeah, booty shorts for when I do yoga, and let me tell you, they were a big hit with the fiance.
Now for this top, I knew what I wanted my top to look like, but then had to go and pick out the yarn for it. I love leather and suede, so when I saw this yarn, it was a shoe in.
Right now I'm being motivated by this little number from White Lies Designs. It's the Angelina Vintage Jacket #502. I'm knitting it up in Debbie Bliss's Alpaca Silk in Ecru. I don't have any pictures up yet, but hope to have some soon. Let me know what motivates you.

Wow! those are super nice! Welcome to the blogging world!
Woooo, knit shorts! That's really something. And I love that top--it looks fantastic.
I have loved that jacket since the first time I saw it! I can't wait to see the finished result!
Your knit shorts have left me (and my husband) speechless! Loving the shawl.
Those shorts are too cute. I was actually thinking about doing the fatigue pants.
