Loop Neckline T-Shirt Tutorial

I wanted to make one more top for SMOT since it coming to an end. This would make top #4 for me. I was trying to figure out what to make when I came across some inspiration from the LOFT.

I really liked the way the top was embellished and thought to myself, I'd like something like that but in a basic top/t-shirt. Since I didn't have a pattern for the basic t-shirt, I decided to come up with my own. Now, I did promise a tutorial of how I've been coming up with the self-drafted tops I've been making lately. I didn't want to disappoint anyone so, here's a little look see of how I've been doing it.

I started out with a t-shirt that I've had for quite some time. I liked the neckline and cut of this shirt. From there I place the shirt on my drawing table/workboard. I lay my tracing paper over it and place drafting tape at all 4 corners. From there I use my blunt edge tracing wheel by Clover(If you don't have one of these, get one, they're great). I then trace the outline of the top front and back. It looks a little something like this when you're done. Next, draw the lines in with a pencil. I then double check what I drew by folding the top in half and laying the drawing up against it. I start making any corrections there. Lastly, I lay the back and front pieces against each other to make sure they match, if they don't(which they normally don't), I make any necessary corrections to make sure that they do. From there, I drew in my seam allowances and cut the pattern out. I then sewed my top together. For the neckline embellishment I cut 2 inch strips 60 inches long, or however long the width of your fabric is for bias-tape trim. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and iron. Open the strip back up and then fold the edges in to the center fold and iron. Now fold the piece in half again and stitch it closed. At this point you are now ready to start pinning your bias stripes on to your blouse. Make sure to finish off your neckline first, even though you don't see that in these 2 pictures. I tend to work backwards sometimes. If you have a dressform, use her. If not, lay your blouse on a table or your ironing board, it's just as good. That way you can get a sense of what the blouse will look like as you go along. Pin the edge of the bias stripe to the blouse then fold the bias strip in a zig zag formation forming a loop and pinning as you go. The first row should be about a quarter to a half inch from the edge of the blouse. When it looks the way you want it, baste the strip to your blouse and then take it to the machine. Do the same thing again, but this time, make sure that the bias strip is covering the edge of your blouse. Pin, baste and then stitch it to your blouse permanently. That it. Enjoy, and Embellish to your heart's content.

Crisis Averted!!!!

Everyone I know started getting their April Burda issue last week, but my copy was no where to be seen. I had purchased my subscription through Amazon, and you know I wasn't happy. I spoke to my buddy Karen and she agreed with me that I should check things out because I didn't get a renewal notice and she stated that she didn't think Amazon did renewals. Well my friends, I was freaking out by Monday. I checked my subscription and it stated that it wasn't expired until May 2010. I put an email in to Amazon, who then transferred me to the magazine company that handled my subscription. On Tuesday I received an email back on my inquiry and I was a little upset. I found out that my subscription had been fulfilled with the March 2010 issue, which meant Ms. Andrea was not getting an April issue. Well, we couldn't have that now could me. I was on the phone yesterday morning with a quickness. I found out that Amazon does NOT send out renewals for subscriptions (bad, bad, bad BADDDDD), THANKS Karen for the heads up again. I was able to renew my subscription directly through the magazine company and they assured me that I will now get renewal notices on a yearly basis. I have also calmed down because I was able to get my April issue, so hopefully I'll see that in a few days.
In other sewing news, I finally cut out Simplicity 4256. View C. It's the beige jacket to the far right at the top.

I still need to cut the lining out. I'm hoping to get that done tonight. Then I just need to mark it up and do some thread tracing and I'm ready to go. I'm hoping to get some sewing done this weekend. We'll see.
I finished the Vera Wang skirt except for hemming.
I plan on finishing that up by the weekend as well. I think I might serge and then prick stitch the hem. I haven't done prick stitching on a hem in a long time. I need to bone up as they say on my hand sewing skills.

I also finished the chemo hat that I was working on for a friend. Sorry it's not modeled but I'm sure you can understand. I can tell you this, the hat is sharp when it's worn. My hairdresser saw it Friday night and now she wants one, and personally I like it too, so I guess that will be hat #3 in the works.

I started working out again a couple of weeks ago, and I'm still going strong. I've lost about 6 pounds. It's a slow go but I'm trying. On Tuesday night I took a Zumba class for the first time, and LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVE it. I am totally hooked. It kicked my butt, and I was crying for the last 15 minutes as I wanted to quit, but there were these 2 older women in back of me, I'd say around the age of 65 and older. I wasn't quitting if they weren't. Plus the class was packed. I didn't want to leave my corner.

I could walk a mile in these babies!!!

I finished the slippers I've been working on for my friend Saturday morning. I think I might have to make a pair for myself as they are so comfortable. I tried a new trick on them. I put puff paint on the bottom of the slippers in the hopes that it will act as a non-sliding agent. Soon enough I should find out if it works or not. Either way, it looks cute on the bottom.

Saturday afternoon, my wonderful husband and I hung out at the gym and we finished our workout with a swim. He's got me doing laps. Let me tell you right off, I am not a lap swimming girl. It's really hard. I swim really well, but my breathing technique is for the birds. Hopefully by the summer he'll have me going the distance since he swims like a fish.

Yesterday I started making headbands. I finished these 2 so far. This morning my neighbor let me borrow her daughter for these pictures. I owe her a yellow one to go with her Easter dress. Isn't she cute!

Now I really need to buckle down and get some major sewing done. There's a dress and jacket that needs to be seriously worked on.

Eliana I have forgotten about the award. And I just found out I won my first giveaway. Yippee!!

Weekend Update!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I did. My weekend actually ended today, but I'll tell you about that in a bit. First, I want to thank all of you for the lovely comments you left me about Calypso and my strapless jumpsuit.

Mr. D and I don't always get a chance to spend time together as he works a lot of crazy hours with his job. Even though we've had some great weather lately, we've also had some stormy weather too, which means, we don't see each other. That combined with family obligations and friends, sometimes keep us apart. Well, Mr. D said this weekend was mine. Yesterday we went for an 8 mile bike ride through John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. It's about 2 miles from our home, and a great place to go if you want to get next to nature. To finish the night off, we rode the motorcycle to Media for Indian food at SHERE-E-PUNJAB. It was our first time there and the food was great. Today, we hung out around the house. We also took a trip to Home Depot, one of our favorite places for mulch(I'm so tired of the weeds), some potting dirt and a power drill. We also did some window shopping for future projects.

In knitting news, I hung out with my friend excel for the past 2 days and worked on finally typing up my lace chart for my newest shawl wrap design. It was tedious but rewarding. I ran into one problem, I am not using any special software besides excel and I didn't know the symbol for K3tog so I just made up one. If any of you have any suggestions, or knows what the actual excel symbol is, please let me know. I did keep all the other symbols consistent with the other standard symbols used for excel. Mr. D says it looks like an alien language to him, but I've got chills just looking at this chart.

I also joined Tour de Fleece last week on Ravelry. I was a little late since it started I think on July 4th, but I wanted to do it pretty much just to start spinning again. I finished a second bobbin today and started plying. I have to set the twist next. I haven't taken pictures yet. I'll try to while I'm setting the twist tomorrow.

I also got first dibs at a yard sale that was scheduled for this past Saturday. I got a private sit in as I call it on Thursday. The woman was a serious crafter. She sewed, knitted, weaved and made pottery. I got a half a box of fabric, a couple cones of yarn and some beads for jewelry. One of my friends is a friend of her niece. Supposedly, I've got thread cones coming. I tried to score one of her knitting machines, but she wasn't selling, at least not yet anyway. Oh well, as soon as I get the thread, I'll take pictures of the whole lot.

I didn't do any sewing over the weekend except for two garments I fixed for 2 of my neighbors. I think I'm starting to become the neighborhood seamstress/repair lady. I do hope to make something for myself this week. We'll see.

How was your weekend?

Calypso and Review on Self Drafted Jumpsuit

I hope everyone had a great weekend filled with peace and quiet and lots of crafting. I buckled down this weekend with some knitting and I finally have a finished knitted garment to show you. I am so happy with the outcome.

This is Calypso. I've been working on her for the past few months off and on. I got a chance to test drive her last night at the Italian festival. Man were those pork sandwiches good. Now, if I can focus a bit, review all my notes, and channel some sizing issues, I might just have a pattern to share with you all.

I'm also happy to add that I finally started working out. I started with a half hour of yoga yesterday and I made it through 25 minutes of the DVD. Today I'll add and aerobic workout first and do the yoga afterwards. I hope I can make it. It's crazy how out of shape you can get when you don't work out for a few months.

On a lighter note, as promised, here is a review of the Self Drafted Jumpsuit I made.

Pattern Description:

one piece strapless jumpsuit

Pattern Sizing:

12

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Self drafted pattern

Were the instructions easy to follow?

I winged this one all the way, and love the outcome. Man do I love my serger. It makes things so much easier and faster to finish.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I put this jumpsuit together in about 2 hours.

Fabric Used:

Cotton or polyester jersey knit. Not really sure. I'm starting to think it's more of a polyester knit. I picked the fabric up at Walmart for a $1.50 a yard. That price alone has me smiling.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:

I didn't want an elastic casing to show at the top of the band so I stitched the elastic and tricot to the edge of the fabric at the top of the bodice. The band is then folded down and the tricot is in place hiding any inside work.

The bottom of the tricot is then serged to the waistline where the bottom of the bodice and pants meet. After that, I tacked/stitched a couple of stitches on the side seams right below the elastic (stitch in the ditch) to keep everything in place.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Definitely. I think I want one in red now.

Conclusion:

It was a wonderful idea that stemmed from a picture of a well known celebrity. The concept is pretty easy. Make a tube top making sure to place darts in the front and back of the bodice to get a more fitted look. If you have a TNT pants pattern you like with a wide leg, use it. The sky is the limit.

Inga, Matilda and My 1st Self Draft Pattern!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Mine was relaxing and uneventful. It's been a while, and a lot has happened. I think I needed a blog break/vacation. Although, I've been away, I still kept up with my reading even though I haven't done much commenting.

My birthday presents finally arrived in the mail. Meet Matilda, she arrived first. It's the Dell Inspiron mini, which I received from my wonderful husband. I like the fact of knowing that I can carry her around in my handbag. I'm still getting use to her, and I do like a regular laptop better, but she is growing on me.

My next lovely present was Inga!! She is the Singer 14CG754 ProFinish Serger. Can I tell you that I just love her. I've never owned a serger before, and I think I'm in for a lovely ride. She had me a little frazzled at first. After a phone call to Sheila,(she always calms me down. Thanks girl!!) and then one to Sew and Vac Direct, (One of my strings weren't caught in the tension dial tight enough. Shoot, I thought I'd broke the darn machine)I was up and running.

To commemorate the occasion, I decided to try and self draft my first pattern. Here she is. Adrienne, I hope you like her. I got the idea from you a while back. I think I like the cost even better(Nope, I LOVEEEEEEE the outfit too). The fabric was a find at Walmart for a mere $1.50 a yarn and it feels fabulous. I purchased 4 yards and only used 1 1/8 yards. I lined the bodice with black tricot that I purchased at Philadelphia Fabric Outlet in Philadelphia. Let me tell you. I will make sure I check there first for my tricot before going to JoAnn's again for it. JoAnns sells tricot for 9.99 a yard. I stocked up at the outlet. I got 2 yds of white tricot 64 inches for 98 or 99 cents a yard, cream tricot for a little less that 1.50 a yd at 64 inches, and the black tricot was 4.50 a yd at 100 inches. I'll do a more in depth review by the weekend, but I can tell you now that I would definitely make this one again!!

This past weekend I worked on McCall's 5621.I'll try to have a review with pics of me in the dress by the weekend. Mr. D says he likes the dress, but he's not feeling the pattern on the fabric. I think I'm going to make it again using a different pattern.

In other news, I got laid off from my job a few weeks ago. My whole office closed. We are suppose to reopen in September. I guess we'll see. I've been starting to get things done around the house. It's been a slow go, but it's getting done. My mother is loving it, I've taken her to all her doctor's appoints, which so far there has been one every week.

In knitting news, I'm still working on my shawl/wrap. It's coming along slowly, but I do like it. Here's a little taste.

Weekend Update

I hope you all had a great weekend. Mine wasn't bad at all. I picked up fabric at JoAnn's Friday after work for a BWOF and Butterick pattern. I then went and hung out with my band mates. Sat. morning I started working on BWOF pattern 4-2009-122.

Yes, I have officially started a Burda pattern, can you believe it? I still can't. I'll talk more about that in a bit. I finished Saturday off by getting my hair done, hanging out with my mom and then watched the last episode of ER on Hulu. Sunday I spent the morning in church, it was Palm Sunday, and did a little shoe shopping. I wanted these Keds Hampton Oxfords. I also have them in a mule style as well.To finish out the night I watched the last 2 episodes of Lost. Just when I thought they couldn't do anything else with this show. It just blows my mind that it's still keeping my interest. It's really good.

In knitting news, I worked on Victoria a little, I pretty much am on the border portion of the skirt right now. I have one more pattern repeat to go. I hope to finish that off this week so that I can block it over the weekend. I also got a chance to work on my latest design while on the train going to and from work yesterday.

As I said earlier in this post, I started working on BWOF 4-2009-122. I understood the directions after reading them twice. I think the problem was that there weren't any pictures for examples, but I proceeded forward anyway. I figured if I started with an easy enough pattern, I should be okay whether there were instructions or not. It also helps that they have numbers in the corners where each pattern piece should go together. I traced the pattern pieces out on Saturday morning and added the seam allowances Sunday night using this compass which I found at Staples a couple of months ago. I like it because it has a dull point instead of a needle, so I can easily drag it along the lines already traced, and it doesn't bore any holes. The paper I'm using for my pattern pieces is Canson White Sketch/Tracing paper 24 in x 50 yds, which I purchased at Dick Blick. I love this stuff and it was pretty inexpensive.

Since I was in the cutting out mood, I also cut out the pattern pieces for Butterick 4810. I'm doing view B & E (top left hand corner). I washed and ironed all of the fabric that I want to use last night. Boy was that a chore, but if there is any shrinkage going on, it should be taken care of. I plan on cutting everything out tonight and possibly start sewing, but we'll see how far we get. ( I have to make a trip to JoAnn's tonight. I realized last night that half of the stuff I bought on Sunday to use for 2 projects is missing.) I'm feeling a little weird about cutting the pieces up for view B on the Butterick pattern as it also serves as the pattern pieces for the longer version top and dress, so I might just trace view B out on some of my tracing paper. Let me tell you, tracing patterns isn't as bad as I thought it would be. It kind of made me feel like a real designer. Mr. D came out into the living room and thought he was in a fabric mill/design house.

Except for the crazy rain, hail and cold weather ( I still can't believe it was warm on Sunday. I didn't even need to wear a jacket.), that's pretty much it for what's going on at the couture house of Andrea, What's are you all up to?

New Beginnings

Today was definitely a date for the history books. It was a day that I never thought I'd see during my lifetime or at least, not this early, but never the less, it was a day of hope, promise and change. Today, I saw an eloquent man, husband, and father take the oath of office, and boy did he shine. These next 4 years are going to be trying for all of us, but after seeing what I saw today, the bonding of strangers, and of family and friends, I think, we're all going to be alright.

Now, enough of my blabbering. I hope all of you are alive, kicking, screaming and crafting large in 2009. Although I've been a little quiet, my hands have been busy. I crochet embroidered on She's Got Legs for my co-worker and added crocheted ties at the top so that they'd stay up with no problem. She loved them.

I finished scarf #1 a personal pattern for my other co-worker Judy. She loved it. She ran around the office all day telling everyone she had an Andrea original. I smiled. It's always so nice to know that something you put a lot of effort into is well received. She been wearing it ever since.

I'm still working on the woodland scarf. I'm on skein #4. I was thinking that I had to do maybe one more skein after this, but I might not have to. I'll see after I finish this one. I'm hoping that I'll be done by this weekend. This past weekend I picked up the burnish tunic that I started before the holidays. I finished the body and am now working on the sleeves.

In keeping with my resolutions, I started a crochet blanket on New Years night. I haven't gotten to far because I haven't worked on it in over a week, but still, it already covers my lap. I started with a granny square, and then built the blanket out from there. I also started spinning again. Sorry, I didn't take a picture. I have 1 1/2 spools done so far, so I'll be plying soon. I saw where Amanda's been dying her roving. That is something I would like to try this year as I purchased some dye and some cormo roving a year and a half ago just for that purpose. But, I'm not ready yet. Plus, I have a ton of roving here that needs to be spun up and knitted.

Back in the fall, I started a new design, but put it down once the holidays came around to get the holiday knitting done. Over the weekend, I pulled it out and reviewed my notes. Hopefully, I'll have something new to show soon. All I can tell you right now, is that I like what I'm seeing so far. I haven't forgotten the pattern for Victoria. I have to have it test knitted. I'm hoping to have the pattern out by this Spring.

As for sewing news, nothing much is going on at the House of Andrea. I'm pretty much just in the planning stages. I picked up the January issue of Burda World of Fashion. I love this issue.

December's issue was really good too. There were a few patterns to relax in for those lazy weekends. I have yet to make a pattern out of one of these magazines, but I'm trying to get up the courage. I'm thinking I might start small first. Like this vest for starters which is in the plaid section of the January issue.I have a bolt of muslin. I figure I can start there first and build from there. What are you all up to?
